David Aplin Group, one of Canada's Best Managed Companies, has partnered with our client to recruit for a Medical Underwriting Manager based in Edmonton, AB.
Under the leadership of the Director of Underwriting and Life Operations, the Manager of Medical Underwriting is responsible for the efficient operation of the Medical Underwriting department through the effective use of staff and systems. This position is suitable for those that have previous medical experience and are dedicated to providing superior leadership to a growing team of underwriters and administrative staff.
The Role:
Displays management and leadership skills daily; including coaching, mentoring, relationship building, performance management, and continuous learning support to all levels of the team.
Ensure employees receive guidance and training necessary to enable them to perform the underwriting function in an effective and customer-focused manner.
Reviews large case applications to evaluate mortality and morbidity risk. Counter-signs on cases written by developing underwriters, while providing appropriate feedback and growth goals.
Serves as an expert resource and departmental representative for external/internal customers.
Participate in strategic and operational planning on corporate and departmental levels.
Recommend and implement underwriting policies and procedures to increase productivity, provide high levels of service and reduce expenses.
Explores and reports on industry trends to streamline business and medical processes through system enhancements and automation.

The Ideal Candidate:
An excellent and proven leader with the ability to motivate and provide direction to the Underwriting team.
Working knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology is mandatory. Ideal candidates would be those individuals with at least 3 years of previous medical underwriting experience and completion of full or partial course work in the medical field e.g. nurses, lab technologists, pharmacists.
Must have excellent time management/organizational skills, be able to work autonomously and perform under tight deadlines.
Self-motivated with excellent computer, communication, and analytical skills.
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with peers, superiors, and co-workers.
Completion of, or willingness to complete, ALU and LOMA courses; preference given to those who have achieved FALU/FLMI designations.
