Position: Accountant
Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented Accountant to manage our financial records with precision and integrity. This role is essential for maintaining accurate financial data, overseeing budget management, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements. The ideal candidate will have experience in a nonprofit or grant-funded setting and be proficient in accounting software and tools.
Tasks and Responsibilities

Financial Record Keeping and Maintenance:

Maintain accurate financial records using QuickBooks and Dext for data entry and organization.
Manage various accounts, including accounts payable and receivable.
Set up and maintain filing systems for accounts payable and receivable, both physically and digitally.
Create and update records as needed for accurate transaction tracking.

Budget Management:

Develop and monitor budget-to-actual reports for grants to track spending and ensure compliance.
Track grant receipts and calculate deferred amounts.
Provide advice on potential risks related to grant-funded projects, including under or overspending.
Financial Reporting:

Prepare financial statements such as trial balances, balance sheets, and income statements.
Generate financial reports by analyzing and summarizing account information and trends.
Prepare claim statements for grant reporting, ensuring accuracy and adherence to grant guidelines.
Accounts Reconciliation:

Post journal entries and reconcile accounts to maintain accurate financial data.
Reconcile cash and credit card transactions, including those from Stripe, on a regular basis.
Payment Processing:

Calculate and prepare cheques for payroll and other expenses.
Issue tax receipts for donations and manage donor records.
Process bi-weekly payroll, ensuring correct salary and deduction calculations.
Manage benefit deductions, such as health insurance premiums and retirement contributions, and ensure timely vendor payments.
Tax Compliance:

Complete and submit tax remittance forms, workers' compensation forms, and other government documents.
Prepare and submit GST and HST tax returns quarterly.
Grant Accounting:

Maintain and manage grant accounts, including verifying, allocating, and posting transactions.
Reconcile grant accounts and transfer summaries to the general ledger.
Prepare financial reports specific to grant-funded projects and ensure compliance with grant requirements.
Policy and Process Development:

Contribute to the development and enhancement of financial policies and processes to improve efficiency and compliance.

Administrative Support:

Provide administrative support related to financial operations and assist the Executive Team with related duties.

Legal Compliance:

Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local financial regulations and reporting requirements.
Stay informed on relevant regulations and advise management on necessary actions for compliance.
Team Collaboration:

Collaborate with colleagues and support team efforts to achieve organizational goals.

Experience and Skills

Diploma or degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
2-3 years of experience in bookkeeping, preferably within a nonprofit or grant-funded organization, with experience managing budgets of $2M+.
Proficiency in QuickBooks, Dext (Receipt Bank), Stripe, and Microsoft Excel; advanced Excel skills are preferred.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial record-keeping.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.
Knowledge of Canadian accounting standards and regulations.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Commitment to the mission and values of the organization.

Contract Duration: 1 year contract with the possibility of extension
Schedule: 35 hours a week. 9am-5pm with flexibility. Willing to work evenings and weekends as needed
